RELEASE DAY! WIND RIVER LAWMAN by Lindsay McKenna

August 28, 2018

WIND RIVER LAWMAN by Lindsay McKenna
Book 6
Wind River Valley Series

The new novel from the bestselling author of Lone Rider.

Sometimes the war comes to you . . .

After serving as a Navy medic, Dawson Callahan is back in the States and ready to start over. Leaving his native Texas, he heads for the wide open spaces of Wyoming, where he finds work as a wrangler. True, he’ll mainly be wrangling chickens—and wrangling Sarah Carter’s granny, who’s still spry, but in need of a little caregiving. But ranch work is ranch work, and it’s hard to turn down a job offer from the beautiful Sheriff Carter—especially when she deputizes him as one of her lawmen.

Sarah loves her grandmother, but with her law enforcement career keeping her busy, they could both use some help from a strong, steady man. And policing Lincoln County has only gotten tougher since a merciless drug lord arrived in the area. When Sarah takes a bullet on the job, it’s Dawson who comes to her rescue—and though they both thought they left war behind in Afghanistan, they’ll do whatever it takes to protect what’s theirs, even if it means facing down traumas they’ve buried for years. Because love isn’t for the faint of heart . . .

EXCERPT

June 2
Sarah’s eyes widened. There on her personal computer the next morning, was a resume for the ad she’d placed! She quickly scanned the email.

‘My name is Dawson Callaway. Enclosed is my resume’ for your job.’

She sat at her office chair in her own small home that was a block from the courthouse building where the Sheriff’s department was located. It was seven a.m. and she was due to go to work at eight a.m. The only thing good about being the sheriff is that she wasn’t on a shift schedule, which she hated, but had done for too many years earlier. Trying to quell her excitement, she opened up the file that said: RESUME’ on it.

Leaning down, looking at her Apple McIntosh laptop screen, she watched the resume’ open up. As she rapidly scanned it, her heart beat a little harder in her chest. This man was a Texas born ranch wrangler, thirty years old, single and had been in the US Navy as a combat corpsman for over ten years before his enlistment was up.

What were the chances? Sarah let out a soft sigh escape from between her lips, staring at the resume’, reading it again. Making sure she didn’t miss anything. This sounded too good to be true. Was it? In her business as Sheriff, she saw the dregs and the worst of society. Not the best. Without thinking, she touched the screen with her fingertips. Dawson Callaway sounded perfect for the job but she cautioned herself. First, when she got to work she’d run a thorough research on him via law enforcement channels. There was no way she wanted a felon or someone with a bad teen background, working with her dearly beloved grandmother. No way. That was first. Next, after ruthlessly researching his background for law breaking issues, Sarah would contact a friend she had at the Pentagon. He would get her the man’s DD-214 and that would fill in another huge blank about his entire military service, what kind of discharge he got, and if he had any issues within that time frame. People lied all the time. Or they told half truths or half lies, thinking it was all right. And it wasn’t. She wanted to know everything about this Texan (if indeed he had been born in Amarillo, Texas) before setting up a meeting with him to pursue the possibility of being hired as Gertie’s assistant.

She wished she had a photo of him. So, she ran a Google search on him and came up with nothing. That was strange. Most people nowadays had a social media account, and he had no Facebook page, not Twitter account…no…nothing. That raised a red flag up to a point. He was a US Navy medic, a combat trained one, assigned to a Marine Corps company. She was intimately familiar with the Corps because she’d joined at age 18 and left at age 22, but not before serving over in Afghanistan in Helmund Province, one of the most dangerous areas to have a deployment. Yes, every squad in a company had a Navy combat corpsman assigned to them. So that part fit and was accurate.

Sitting back, she wiped her face with her hands, feeling the weight and stress on her shoulders. Funny how she could let the stress in her Sheriff’s side slide off and it was much less troublesome, than family stress. Family was personal as it got and Sarah understood why it was taking a toll on her. She dearly loved Gertie. And she wanted to protect her and find someone who was damn near an angel in quality, mentality and very compassionate, to aid her. And she knew just how long the odds were of finding a man like that.

Her mind canted to the past, to the Navy corpsman in their squad. He was kind, quiet and listened a lot, but didn’t say much. Most of the ones she’d met in those years in the Corps, were all like that. They were someone you’d want at your side if you were bleeding out, knowing you were going to die. There was a streak of compassion in them, a humanity, that Sarah rarely found in anyone but the medical first responder world whether an EMT, paramedic or combat corpsman. There was no question that those in the medical service field were a certain personality type. She hoped with all her heart that Callaway possessed that same kind of personality, but she’d only find out if he passed the first series of rigorous searches. What did he look like? She was dying to find out because she had a knack for reading faces.

NIGHT HAWK by LIndsay McKenna: The Making of a Cover!

KING OF A ROMANCE COVER: NIGHT HAWK by Lindsay McKenna, HQN, Book 10 Wyoming Series

Night Hawk cover

Harlequin was very nice in sending this to me. Readers are ALWAYS fascinated by what goes into the making of a cover.
NIGHT HAWK is set in the Jackson Hole, WY area.

What I love in this one is that the Moulton Barn, in the background, is in the valley with the Tetons in the background. Whoever made this cover in the Art Department went out of their way to get the area “right’, which is always great (but doesn’t happen often.)

Every time I go up to the Grand Tetons (20 north of Jackson Hole, WY) and Yellowstone National Park (which is 50 miles norht of JH), I always stop and take photos of Moulton Barn. And here’s one of my recent photos of it. You can see they are the same barn….where reality meets fiction!
From a photographer’s viewpoint? Moulton Barn is an ICON and a “Bucket List” place for serious amateur and professional photographers. What’s nice is that it is 1.5 days away from where Ilive. I’ll be gong up to Caspar, WY for Kallypso Masters Kallycon featuring cowboy authors in late August, 2016.

http://kallypsomasters.com/kallypsocon/kallypsocon-2016/

And then? Why we’ll drive from Caspar afterward over to Jackson Hole and spend seven heavenly days shooting wildlife during rutting season in the Tetons National Park, and of course. I will make my annual visit to Moulton Barn and photographic again

If you’re coming to Kalycon/Caspar (and I hope you do!) maybe some of you will join me on our photographic hunt for Moose, Grizzly, Antelope, Elk, Deer, and other fabulous wild creatures that we love to photograph so much!

It is an ICONIC place for all photographers to come and shoot it and they come from around the world!

The hidden story behind “Night Spirit”
The artist’s statement:

The elusive wolf… Having admired this magnificent animal all of my life it was only a matter of time before I stumbled upon the right piece of wood and found the “wolf’s spirit” hidden within.  Combing through volumes of reference material, I made every effort to capture the wolf’s mysterious and haunting gaze.  I am pleased and think that you will agree, the ‘gaze’ of the this wolf looks right through you!  So life-like, so eerie, so real.  You can sense his spirit.  The coldness of his nose, the wetness of his eyes.  It is done.

As you study this sculpture look carefully at the front first.  I have hidden a small howling wolf head in the lower right hand corner. Now, as you turn to the back, how many eagle heads do you see?  I’ll give you a hint: there are two!  Enjoy!

The sculpture is cast resin, is 10 1/2” high and 10” wide.  It weighs approximate 20 pounds.

Ex-Navy SEAL Talon Holt, knows all about heart rending loss. He lost his rancher father at age eleven. When his mother, Sandy Holt remarries, his foster father, Bradley, becomes a powerful and positive, loving father figure as he grows up on their family owned Triple H Ranch near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Talon leaves and joins the US Navy, becoming a vaunted SEAL. While he’s away, his foster father dies of a heart attack, leaving his mother, Sandy Holt, to run the large ranch by herself. Later, she contracts breast cancer and is forced to sell their ranch to pay her escalating medical bills. Through it all, Talon tries to be there for her, but is on deployment in Afghanistan, unable to support her as much as he wants. He sends most of his monthly pay check home to her, saving none for himself.

At twenty-eight years old, Talon is wounded and so is his combat assault dog, Zeke, on a deadly mission in Afghanistan. Both are discharged from the military, the nature of their wounds never allowing them to remain in the SEALs. Talon gets words when he’s recovering in the hospital, that his mother’s breast cancer has returned. She is nearly penniless and he must get home to be there for her; to help her. He must find a job to help earn money to pay her mounting medical bills. Yet, he’s gotten PTSD from an incident, that he can’t stand to be enclosed places like a plane, bus or train. Further, he’s been given Zeke, a Belgium Malinois, who can never do his job again because of his own war wounds. The two walk from San Diego, California to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Talon is stubbornly committed to getting home even though he’s weakened and has very little money on him. His loyal dog, Zeke, is always at his side.

Cat Edwin, paramedic and firefighter for the Jackson Hole Fire Department, driving to the Bar H during a late May snowstorm. She works there a part-time wrangler for Gus Hunter, who owns it. Griff and Val McPherson run the ranch for the eighty-four year old elder. Val is her granddaughter. What Cat doesn’t expect to find on the blizzard like conditions a mile away from the ranch, on the snow covered highway, is a man with a dog on a leash.

Little does she realize as she stops to rescue them from the blizzard, that this one compassionate act on her part will begin to change her life. She is good friends with Sandy Holt, and has never met her son, who is returning home from the military to be with his struggling mother. Gus Hunter is happy to see Talon home, offering him help from the blizzard. Zeke, his dog, is another thing all together, but the Hunter family adjusts to having an ex-SEAL combat attack dog among them. Cat is powerfully drawn to Talon, and yet, fights it. She’s got problem with an ended relationship she walked away from a year ago, but the man is now stalking her.

With help from the Hunters, Talon gets back on his feet to become a wrangler working to make money to help, once more, pay for his mother’s medical bills. He’s glad to be home to be with her, their relationship always strong and loving. What he doesn’t expect, however, is to find love for himself with Cat Edwin. The struggles, challenges and the heartbreak of coming home could weaken a lesser man, but Talon calls on his years as a SEAL. What he doesn’t realize is that Cat’s stalker is lethal. And that more than his strength and hard work as a SEAL are going to be called upon to protect her. When Cat is surrounded by danger, all Talon can think is that, once again, he will lose someone he loves. And that just can’t happen again…

If you have been reading my Wyoming Series, you will see returning people such as Gus, Val’s grandmother, Val and Griff McPherson and Cat Edwin.
