Memorial Day Remberances by Lindsay McKenna

May 30, 2016

I want to honor my father and mother on Memorial Day. My father, Jack Zimmerman, was a Pharmacists Mate 1st class in the US Navy. He was assigned to Hawaii, to Oahu, the hospital that sits next to Pearl Harbor. My mother worked in civil service at Ford Island, in Pearl Harbor, with the US Navy.
Both my parents were there when Pearl Harbor was hit by the Japanese, December 7, 1941. My father was on duty at the hospital that morning. My mother was asleep in their bed. A Japanese Zero went roaring down the road, strafing her neighborhood. She had a bullet pass just above the headboard of the bed where she was sleep.

That day, my parents helped all the heroes who were caught off guard by that horrific attack on battleship row, next to Ford Island. If it hadn’t of happened on a Sunday, my mother would have been on Ford Island, in one of the hangars, working as a secretary.

I grew up with the story of Pearl Harbor from a very different perspective than most of the Great Generation and Baby Boomer Generation remember. I have the blood of the battle in my DNA. And I never forget what they did that day, the sights, the sounds, the nauseating smells, the diving Japanese fighters like hornets swarming over Pearl Harbor.

It’s no wonder I grew up and at age 18, went into the US Navy to follow in my father’s footsteps. My mother’s brother, Vinton Cramer, served in WW2, US Army, was a paratrooper and dropped in over France to do his duty.

US Navy boot camp photo of me. I followed in my father’s footsteps and paid my service to my country, as he and so many other of our family, had done in past wars. My war was Vietnam. And it’s no wonder that later on? I became a writer and I created the first military romance, Captive of Fate, 1983, Silhouette Special Edition. I have gone on from that day to the present, writing about our heroic men and women in 185 books, since then. And will continue to do so until it’s my time to cross over. Our military is 1% of our nation. They give the other 99% their freedom. Let’s honor their sacrifices, as well as their family’s sacrifices on this one day of the year. Memorial Day is NOT a holiday. It was created as “Remembrance Day” to honor those who died serving their country.

Let us remember those of our family, both on our mother and father’s side, of the service they gave to our country to keep us all free on this one day out of the entire year.

The hidden story behind “Night Spirit”
The artist’s statement:

The elusive wolf… Having admired this magnificent animal all of my life it was only a matter of time before I stumbled upon the right piece of wood and found the “wolf’s spirit” hidden within.  Combing through volumes of reference material, I made every effort to capture the wolf’s mysterious and haunting gaze.  I am pleased and think that you will agree, the ‘gaze’ of the this wolf looks right through you!  So life-like, so eerie, so real.  You can sense his spirit.  The coldness of his nose, the wetness of his eyes.  It is done.

As you study this sculpture look carefully at the front first.  I have hidden a small howling wolf head in the lower right hand corner. Now, as you turn to the back, how many eagle heads do you see?  I’ll give you a hint: there are two!  Enjoy!

The sculpture is cast resin, is 10 1/2” high and 10” wide.  It weighs approximate 20 pounds.

COURSE OF ACTION: The Rescue by Lindsay McKenna is out 9.1.2014!

August 19, 2014
Course of Action: The Rescue, is book 2 of Merline Lovelace and my series about black ops heroes!

Course of Action: The Rescue, is book 2 of Merline Lovelace and my series about black ops heroes!

Dear Reader:

Getting to write with my good friend and sister military vet, Merline Lovelace, is always a thrill. This is book 2 of 3 on our two novellas in each book series. We have three books, total, in this six-novella series.  This is Book 2.

Course of Action was an idea created by myself and Merline Lovelace for Harlequin Romantic Suspense. There will be three books, one coming out each year, 2013, 2014 and 2015, with connected stories (novellas). She is a sister military vet and been a long-time friend. I came up with a concept of us doing a novella each (35,000 words in length) on the black ops community. She was an Air Force Colonel and was the first woman to run an Air Force Base (and showed the boys how to do it). I was in the US Navy. I had a secret clearance and Merline a top secret clearance. Both of us dealt in the black ops of the secretive military side that civilians don’t get to see.

We wanted to do a sort of show-and-tell on the different black ops communities because each is different in their own, unique way. For example, if it’s got to do with ocean, the the SEALs are called from the US Navy.  There will be stories about an Air Force combat controller, US Navy SEAL, Ranger, Army Special Forces, Marine Force Recon and Delta Force. We chose to do six novellas, two stories about two of the men in each book.

This series will be released by Harlequin Romantic Suspense once a year.
And, we wanted a story that had threads to the other characters so we build a ‘family’ that the readers would love. Merline is a great brain-stormer and fun to work with. We came up with the concept that six young men in a West Texas town in the middle of nowhere, are football heroes. These six men played hard and played together. They called themselves the Sidewinders and had a tattoo on their upper right biceps to prove it. They went on in four years of high school to win two Texas championships; they played as a team, with heart and fierceness.

A day after graduating, Duke Carmichael, Travis Cooper, Dan Taylor, Jack Halliday, Josh Patterson and Chris Winborne, go down to the military recruiter’s office and join the military branch of their choice. And because of their mental toughness, their heart, they all end up in different black ops units in the military branch they chose.
The first two stories are about Duke Carmichael and Travis Cooper. Duke chose to go into the Air Force. Travis became a Navy SEAL.  Below are my comments about my up and coming novella in the Course of Action series stories. This book will be in paperback and eBook and will become available November 5, 2013.

In Book 2 of the 3 series, it is titled COURSE OF ACTION: The Rescue. Here’s a peek at our next two heroes who are both down in the Amazon looking up trouble! Or maybe I should rephrase that and say, Trouble hunts them up!

JAGUAR NIGHT by Lindsay McKenna brings a novella about Sergeant Josh Patterson, Marine Force Recon. When a U.S. General’s daughter is kidnapped, Patterson is handpicked to rescue her. While they trek through the jungle to safety, Aly Landon’s strength and a surprise kiss change everything.

US Navy 18 Delta Combat Medic, Bay Thorn

Navy Hospital Corpsman Bay Thorn is a part of the super secret Shadow Warriors Operation. Flying out of Iraq and finally reaching her destination at FOB Bravo, thirty miles from the Afghan-Pakistan border, Bay doesn’t know what to expect of the SEAL team she’s been ordered to integrate into.

Can you imagine being a woman and being ordered to work/fight in a US Navy SEAL team?  And you are the outsider?  You are not trained to be a SEAL.  And can you imagine how the men of that platoon are going to take a WOMAN coming into their team?

Bay Thorn, US Navy 18 Delta Corpsman attached to Alpha Platoon, US Navy SEALs, Forward Operating Base Bravo, Afghanistan

Bay knows she’s got her work cut out for her.  And only one SEAL in the platoon is willing to give her a chance to prove she’s got what it takes.  Petty Officer First Class Gabe Griffin is a man who sees beneath the mask most people wear.  And as the chief introduces Bay to the platoon, he senses her unease, her worry, about not being accepted.

Only, what Gabe doesn’t expect is to fall in love with Bay over time.  Her goodness, her helping others, opens his own heart to her.  Bay hasn’t come into the team looking for love.  But it happens.  And what to do about it?  Gabe knows to show how he feels toward Bay will tear his team up and create possible loss of life among them.  Bay is more than aware of her feelings for Gabe but is smart enough to realize she can’t show, speak or even hint that she’s falling in love with this quiet, intense, attractive SEAL.

Her whole focus is on getting the rest of the team to accept and trust her out in the field of combat.  There is no place for love in Bay’s life.  And it takes both of them to the breaking point of loving one another and never being able to speak or show or give it voice.  To do so, can not only put them at risk, but also the men of their team.  And neither is willing to do that.  Until events outside their control intervene, leaving them and their survivors in the jaws of the Taliban who want to kill all of them.

I hope you enjoy this gritty, edgy, fresh story that hopefully will have you on the edge of your seat throughout it.  Do let me know?  http://www.lindsaymckenna.com

CWO Sarah Benson, will brave enemy fire to rescue men or women caught in combat and are injured. Growing up, no one came to rescue her from a hellish foster family. And she’s damned if these brave warriors are going to be left to bleed out on the Afghan soil if she can help it. She might never have been rescued as a child, but she can rescue these heroes and save their lives.

And she’s damned if these brave warriors are going to be left to bleed out on the Afghan soil if she can help it. She might never have been rescued as a child, but she can rescue these heroes and save their lives.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Sarah Benson, US Army, Medevac pilot, has fallen in love with Ethan Quinn.  He’s a US Navy SEAL stationed at FOB (forward operating base) Bravo thirty miles from the Afghan-Pak (Pakistan) border.

If you have read the first book, RISK TAKER, Harlequin Romantic Suspense, February, 2014, then you are now reading the sequel.  These two characters were seminal for me in many ways.  Each had a powerful story to tell in their own right. And then, to put them together in the war and combat environment in Afghanistan, was to test every resolve they owned and believed in.

Ethan sees beneath Sarah’s courageous exterior of a Medevac pilot who will not leave those in jeopardy, to bleed out.  She was never rescued in the hellish foster home she grew up in until age twelve.  Because she was never saved, Sarah has made it her life mission to save others, never wanting them to know what it feels like to survive terror and abuse.  He is able to reach her through is poems that he writes and leaves for her at her tent.  And he’s the only male Sarah has ever, truly trusted.  And they are deeply in love with one another.

When her Black Hawk helicopter is shot down in a valley swarming with Taliban, the US Army thinks she and her copilot are dead.  But Ethan and the SEALs don’t think so.  They mount a mission to find out if she survived.   Sarah is alive and on her own.  And all she wants to do is walk the twenty miles to the closest FOB, Thunder, and find safety.  She wants to survive even though the odds are heavily stacked against her.

Ethan and his team find evidence that Sarah has survived.  But they are four SEALs in a valley of Taliban that number in the hundreds.  They must carefully track her, hoping to catch up to her and remain in the shadows, unseen by their mutual enemy.  Eventually, Sarah is captured by Mustafa Khogani, a Hill tribesman chief and leader who hate the Shinwari tribe that lives in the valley.   Sarah is put into a situation that is either going to be a replay of her foster family childhood or to allow a six year old boy to be sacrificed.

Sarah’s faith and trust that the SEALs will know she’s alive and find her, keeps her strong in a situation that deteriorates by the hour.  In less than a day, Khogani is going to take her over the border to Pakistan to be sold to a high Al-Qaeda leader who has plans for her.  She is a military woman captured in combat.  And Khogani knows the public relations coup he’s gotten by capturing Sarah.

February, 2014, Harlequin Romantic Suspense by Lindsay McKenna. This is book 1 of 2. It is a sequel. DEGREE OF RISK comes out March, 2014, Harlequin Romantic Suspense. Don’t miss these two books!

I rarely write sequels, but it looks like 2014, I wrote 2 pairs :-).  One is for Harlequin Romantic Suspense (above) and the other two pairs are for HQN.  All are from the Shadow Warriors series.

BOOK TRAILER:  http://youtu.be/cMzeNLN1Qq8

Everything about RISK TAKER and DEGREE OF RISK, the 2-book sequel, was different and entirely unique to anything I’ve written before.  But that’s what happens when the magic occurs and the author becomes powerfully and deeply into an alchemical process that can never be explained by words alone.

It was interesting to see what happened as I began writing RISK TAKER.  I got so deeply involved in the story of “Blue Eyes,” as she is called by the men at FOB Bravo in Afghanistan, that I knew 75,000 words just wasn’t going to scratch the surface of Medevac pilot, Army Chief Warrant Officer Sarah Benson’s life, her trials, challenges and her incredible courage and strength.

I also knew that because Sarah was badly damaged as a child and she’d fought her way out of it, that only a very special man would ever be able to dissolve the walls that protected her heart.  Her distrust of men is so deep.  She’s tired of being hit on at the FOB.  Sarah doesn’t see her own beauty, her glacier-blue eyes, or her passionate spirit to be a medevac pilot who makes a difference in men and women’s lives hanging in the balance.  But the men of FOB Bravo see her only in a sexual content, covet her and want her for only one thing.  She remains an untouched citadel, one of seventy-five women on the base of one thousand men.  A challenge that every man picks up.

Sarah’s whole being is wrapped up being a Medevac pilot.  She’s damn good at her job, a chief pilot, and has seen a lot of combat in Afghanistan in the last seven years.  Her life revolves around braving dangerous combat conditions in order to fly in and pick up wounded men and women during firefights.  She never endangers her crew or medics, who worship the ground she walks on because she’s passionate about saving lives like they are.  She’s garnered the name “risk taker”  in her medevac squadron because she’ll fly her Black Hawk through hell to reach those on the ground who are going to die if she doesn’t find the courage to land and pick them up–giving them a chance to live against all odds.

Sarah, who was in a life-and-death situation as a young girl from age six through twelve with a foster family, cried nightly for rescue. But it never came.  Now, she’s in control of her own life and she’s turned this nightmare experience into something positive.  She might not have ever been rescued from her personal, ongoing hell, but she can rescue those who are wounded and crying out for help now.  Sarah has turned her life inside out in the most positive of ways.  Her crew she flies with, thinks she’s an angel.  Her commanding officer hates her because her helicopter comes back riddled with bullet holes, shattered Plexiglas windshields and it costs the squadron its budget bottom line.  Never mind that she and her courageous medics have saved men and women’s lives on the battlefield.  Those wounded will live to go home to their loved ones, to their wife, their children and families.

RISK TAKER, February, 2014, Chief Warrant Officer, Sarah Benson, US Army, medevac, Black Hawk helicopter, is stationed with her squadron at Forward Operating Base Bravo. Only thirty miles from the Afghan-Pak border, she flies dangerous missions picking up wounded men in the heat of battle. She’s earned the nickname, “Risk Taker.”

Only thirty miles from the Afghan-Pak border, she flies dangerous missions picking up wounded men in the heat of battle. She’s earned the nickname, “Risk Taker.”

Petty Officer Ethan Quinn, US Navy SEAL, is a straphanger assigned to the SEAL platoon based at FOB Bravo.  He’s been there three weeks and he’s heard of Blue Eyes. She’s part and parcel of the myths that float around an FOB among a thousand horny men.  The things he hears about her do, indeed, sound mythic.  He’s never seen her, but those that have, rave about the color of her eyes, hence her name, Blue Eyes.  And the stories that circulate alongside her beauty and eyes is her iconoclastic reserve where she allows no man near her. She’s single, the stories go.  She sits alone at the chow hall or with other women pilots, but never with a man.  When she’s in the canteen, she sits alone.  If an interested male wants to buy her a drink, she gives him a glare and warning to leave her alone.

Ethan isn’t your typical SEAL.  He keeps part of himself hidden from his SEAL brothers because if they found out that he wrote poetry, they’d never, ever let him live it down.  The ruthless, constant jibbing about a SEAL writing poetry, would ride roughshod on Ethan and he knows it.  His mother was an English teacher.  She taught her three children from age six onward, how to speak, write and read Latin.  She was an accomplished poet with a number of books published.  Ethan, the oldest, got his mother’s poet gene.  She gave him a journal at age seven and taught him to write his thoughts and his feelings down in it.  He urged him to sketch and put drawings in there, too.  Ethan joins the SEALs knowing he has to keep this side of himself top secret.  Poets have no place in the alpha male world of SEALdom.

Ethan has finely developed skills in people watching and understanding, thanks to his instructive and insightful mother.  He sometimes wonders if he hadn’t been so attracted to the SEALs and adventure, if he wouldn’t have been a psychologist, instead.  He utilizes these skills every day with brother SEALs, with the stressed Afghan villagers and when necessary, with enemy Taliban prisoners.  He’s a complex man with many layers to himself.  One thing he has found out in his years as a SEAL, is he has to dump his emotions somewhere.  The things he experiences, the horror of what he sees, is too much for any human being to carry.

Ethan learns early on that allowing one’s emotions to run him, could get him or his brothers killed.  SEALs were taught to put it into a “kill box” and never open it up to feel the horror of their experiences.  To feel is to be distracted.  To be distracted is to be killed.  For him, his journal becomes his kill box.  When his brothers ask what he’s doing, he just tells them it’s kind of a daily diary of his life that someday, he’ll give to his children so they understand what he did in the Navy.  Everyone buys his somewhat honest explanation, and wanders away.   For Ethan, getting those feelings out on paper is essential to his well being.  He can’t stuff and ignore his emotions like the other men.  It’s a positive and healthy outlet for him.  It helps him be a SEAL and still be able to offload his feelings without becoming stoved up by the toxicity of suppressing them in a deep, dark corner of himself.

CWO Sarah Benson with Petty Officer 1st Class Ethan Quinn, US Navy SEAL. Both stationed at FOB Bravo. Sarah is saved by him when attacked by an Army sergeant. She wants nothing to do with men for good reason, but Ethan seeks to find a way through those walls she’s put up. Known on Bravo as “Blue Eyes,” she’s every man’s dream come true. The color of her eyes is a legend at the FOB. But Ethan wants more than just her outer beauty. He wants to gain her trust to gently hold her heart.

The color of her eyes is a legend at the FOB. But Ethan wants more than just her outer beauty. He wants to gain her trust to gently hold her heart.

These two characters came to me and got my full, undivided attention.  They were fascinating, heroic people and I was absolutely swept away by their story.   And their story took more than one book.  That is why I penned the sequel, DEGREE OF RISK.  Ethan isn’t your typical SEAL type of warrior.  He’s not a type A wolf, but a beta wolf.  He doesn’t have to be an ego-busting warrior.  Rather, he utilizes his inner warrior to be just as good, and sometimes, better, than his alpha male brothers.  He has insight, a lot of patience, a laser-like ability to perceive people’s emotions and why they do things the way they do.

Within the platoon, he is a vaunted Communications expert, even at calling in the heavies, the B-52, and directing them to drop their bombs.  He has confidence to burn along with intense focus.  Nothing rattles him in a firefight and he’s been in many of them.  And brother SEALs like it when he’s leading their team because he possesses an almost uncanny, psychic ability to ferret out the enemy and also use it during a firefight to save lives.  It’s easy for Ethan to be an introvert because he is one.  Many of his brothers are extroverts.  He chooses quiet over bedlam.  He needs to be alone to reorder himself to remain in balance and be the best he can be.

In the opening scene of RISK TAKER, Ethan accidentally meets the mythic “Blue Eyes” at the canteen.  Only, he knows from all the constantly circulating stories about her, that he doesn’t dare approach her.  As he comes in off a long, 12-hour patrol, all he wants is a cold beer to wash the Afghan grit and sand out of his throat.  Until he spots Blue Eyes sitting alone at a table in the corner, nursing her own beer.  He sits down at another table, and he senses the aching loneliness around her.  And when he sees her briefly lift her head, his heart is slammed with yearning for her.  He was born in Alaska and seen glacier calve all the time.  The color is unearthly and yet, that very same color is in Chief Benson’s large, beautiful eyes.  Now he understands why every man at the FOB wants her for his own.

What happens next?  Well, you’re going to have to either down load the Ebook or order the paperback.  I guarantee you, it’s one hell of a story.  Two very unique people in a very dangerous environment.  Both are lonely.  Sarah distrusts men completely. Ethan is  stunned by her beauty and that haunting sadness around her.  She is off limits to men.  But Ethan doesn’t see it that way.  He is patient and he watches her obliquely, beginning to register nuances about her on every level of himself.  Now, all Ethan needs is a chance to meet her.

DEGREE OF RISK, March, 2014, places Sarah in an enemy valley, far from any help. Everyone at FOB Bravo thinks she’s died in the Black Hawk crash. All except Ethan and the SEALs mount a rescue to find out if she’s alive or not. And when they find proof she’s still alive, they will move Hell to find and rescue her. Sarah is on her own, a .45 pistol to protect her against the Hill Tribe leader, Mustafa Khogani, Taliban, who knows she’s alive. And when he finds her, she is going to be sorry she’s alive.

COURSE OF ACTION, HRS, November 5 ,2013 by Lindsay McKenna and Merline Lovelace

DEAR READER

Course of Action was created by myself and Merline Lovelace for Harlequin Romantic Suspense.

From Lindsay McKenna:
Out of Harm’s Way
Hero:  Travis Cooper, PO2, US Navy SEAL
Travis is a vaunted SEAL sniper.  The last thing he expects to come through his satellite phone from the forward operating base, Bravo in Afghanistan, is a call to save a kidnapped American woman.  He’s on the Afghan-Pak border, waiting for an HVT, high value target, to cross over from Pakistan into the country where he waits and hides.   Only, his whole plan is dismantled when the call comes through.

The American woman who has been kidnapped by the Taliban, is part of a group brought in from the US to teach Afghans how to breed better horses.  Madison Duncan, 26, has disobeyed the Marine Corps captain’s warning and slips outside the Afghan home where the group has been gathered.  She’s dying to see the small, tough Afghan horses in a corral out back.  It is dusk and Madison’s common sense is swept away by her passion and love of horses.  Only…the Taliban is waiting.  And they kidnap her, riding hard for the Pak border ten miles away.

And the only person standing in their way of getting there is Travis Cooper, a Texas boy who knows horses, too.  And he’s going to have to take on five Taliban on horseback to try and rescue Madison.  And the odds aren’t in his favor:  One SEAL against five well armed enemy soldiers who have a hostage that they’d rather shoot than allow to live.
Can Travis pull off the impossible?  Can he rescue the woman without her being killed in the process?  It’s going to take all his Texas ranching experience along with his SEAL training, to pull off this unexpected op.  IF he can….   There is no US help coming even if he does manage to rescue Madison.  They are deep in enemy territory and everything depends upon Travis’ SEAL knowledge of the area to get her to safety.  What he doesn’t expect is to be powerfully drawn to the brave young woman.
USAF Combat Controllers go through the same brutal training as Rangers and SEALS.  They can ingress a target area on or under water.  They can also scale or rappel down mountains; do high- and low-altitude jumps; engage the enemy in hand-to-hand combat; treat any injuries they or another member of their squad sustains; and live off the land for weeks, if necessary.
What makes combat controllers different from any other Special Operators is that they’re also fully certified Air Traffic Controllers.  They’re the ones who call in air strikes on hostile positions, direct friendly fire, and control combat aircraft in the hot zones.  And often they do this with 500 pound bombs or mortar shells falling all around them.  You can see why I love these guys!
Merline and I truly hope you enjoy the tales of the Sidewinders!
