DREAM OF ME by Lindsay McKenna CONTEST!! EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT!!!

May 20, 2017

Hi Readers! It’s almost release day for Dream of Me by Lindsay McKenna!!!

DREAM OF ME, 4B1, is a Delos series novella and Sequel to BROKEN DREAMS, Book 4. Alexa Culver is the fraternal twin to her older brother, Matt. She was an Air Force A-10 combat pilot for three tours in Afghanistan. On her last deployment she met shy but sincere Marine Corps Sergeant Gage Hunter, who is a sniper. He too, is based at Bagram Army base outside of Kabul. They are a most unlikely couple to fall in love, but perhaps it is their different world experience that is the glue that binds them.

They have worked through Alexa being captured along with many other charity women at a village, and having to be rescued by Gage and US Navy SEALs. This is a follow-up novella on where they stand with one another now that they are out of military. Alexa works at Artemis Security and so does Gage. Each has different wounds that aren’t entirely healed. Especially in Alexa, who had been kidnapped to become a sex slave to a millionaire in Pakistan. Gage is a hero in her eyes like no other man. He has the patience and love of her to deal with her sometimes awkward moments when PTSD flashbacks of her captivity hits her.

Alexa loves Gage fiercely and knows she still has issues to work through, grateful that he stands by her. When she goes to Paris, France, to attend a Human Rights conference, no one expects what is about to happen. Alexa’s family, part Greek, Turkish and American, has made powerful, rich enemies. Their world is suddenly upended once again. And Gage isn’t sure they can mend the bridges once again between them after this latest attack on Alexa. Can their love survive?

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT from Dream of Me by Lindsay McKenna

Valdrin Rasari took one last look in the mirror of the Fontainebleau Hotel, only blocks from the famed Eiffel Tower. Tonight he was going to kidnap one of the Culver family’s grown children: Alexa Culver. He smiled coldly into the full-length gold framed mirror. His mouth curved even more at the irony that he, one of the major sex traffickers in the world, would be a wolf in sheep’s clothing at this conference on sex slavery. He could easily travel the world in disguise with forged passports. Right now, fifty countries had him on their no-fly list. Only third world countries were open to him buying the best children from parents who were starving. “Sell me your child, and you will live to put food on the table for a year for the rest of your family. It’s a good trade.”

This evening at the cocktail party in the huge chandelier ballroom downstairs, no one would recognize him. At six feet tall, muscular without being muscle-bound, he would carry a cane, under the guise of Dr. Analius Revig from the University of Oslo. His injury was from a “skiing accident” in his twenties, of course. Today, his short black hair was dyed gray, and his square-jawed face now sported a sporty gray mustache. His brown eyes had blue contacts over them, covered further by a pair of fashionable wire-rim glasses. After all, he was pretending to be a sixty-five-year-old man . . .

Since his alter ego was a professor, he dressed in a fashionable brown wool sport coat and black wool trousers. Under the elegant coat, he wore a white cotton shirt that had been ironed to perfection; it gave him a professorial look. He wore a black bow tie that was in keeping with the look he desired.

He was looking forward to prowling the huge gathering, eavesdropping, and seeing who was there. Valdrin took great enjoyment in being undercover. He spoke six different languages, Norwegian being one of them. Placing his old leather wallet into his coat pocket and his passport in an inner pocket, he adopted the proper slump and slight lean to the right, his cane in his left hand. Fortunately, he had one of those nondescript faces that no one would ever recognize. In fact, he had destroyed any photos of himself for the last thirty of his forty-five years on this earth. No one really knew who the monstrous Rasari was or what he looked like, even while he was on every country’s radar.

He left his bodyguards behind, a door between the sumptuous rooms. They were handlers from the compound who also looked nondescript, nothing like the usual hulking guards. He smiled, ruffling his hair so it looked like an older person’s hair. Perfecting his slump to the right and engaging a proper limp, he walked around the huge suite until he felt comfortable with his disguise. His target? None other than Alexa Culver who was attending. The pleasure of revenge filled him. By the end of the night she would be lured into his suite, drugged, and then become his personal sex slave. And then her loving family would suffer equally as much, never knowing what happened, where she was and that she would never return home.

CONTEST! Starts May 20 through May 27th! Go here to sign up. Good luck!

HAVE YOU PICKED UP MY LATEST WIND RIVER VALLEY SERIES BOOK? WIND RIVER COWBOY!

An unexpected reunion . . .

Kira Duval was part of a Special Forces team that got caught in an ambush—leaving only two wounded survivors: herself and Weapons Sergeant Garret Fleming. Losing her team was traumatic, and in the chaotic aftermath, as the Army moved them from hospital to hospital, she lost Garret too. But she never lost her secret yearning for him.

Finally, she gave up trying to track him down back in the States. But as she settles in at the Bar C cattle ranch in Wyoming, a place where veterans can find a home and a place to heal, she’s introduced to her sandy-haired, hazel-eyed housemate: none other than Garret Fleming.

They’re a long way from Afghanistan—and a long way from the people they used to be before tragedy changed their lives. But as Kira earns her keep by caregiving for the ranch owner’s bedridden, alcoholic father—a task that sometimes feels more challenging than any black ops mission—she finds that even in peacetime Garret still has her back, and that in this warm, welcoming place, the passion she resisted in the heat of battle may finally have a chance to flouish.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT Wind River Cowboy by Lindsay McKenna!!

March 27, 2017

Hi Readers!!!
I’m so excited! Those who love my contemporary cowboy stories, Book 3, Wind River Cowboy, is finally going to arrive!
Release day: 3.28.17!!

Kira Duval, US Army Special Forces, never expected to fall in love with any man while she worked with an A-team in Afghanistan. But she did. And she never let anyone, not even Weapons Sergeant, Garret Fleming know what lay in her heart for him.

She didn’t know if it was reciprocal because every man on the A-team treated her like their favorite sister. They treated her as an equal and they trusted her without question. Kira knew that if there was any hint of intimacy with Garret, it would fracture the team. And there was no way she was going to do that.

But Fate has a way of intervening and their worlds explode on them during a Taliban attack. Kira saves Garret after he is wounded. In the end, they lose track of one another for three years. Broken by PTSD, Kira is out of the Army and trying to find a job at a Wyoming ranch. And again, her life turns upside down.

EXCERPT from Chapter 1, Wind River Cowboy by Lindsay McKenna:

“Ambush!”

Sergeant Kira Duval’s earpiece rang with the warning
from Army Captain Aaron Michelson, the Special Forces
A team leader. The night was black and an RPG exploded
right in between the two Humvees they were riding in. The
twelve-person team halted and all hell broke loose.
Kira exited the vehicle, hearing the hollow thunk of
another RPG being fired in their direction. She heard more
orders in her earpiece as she threw herself on the muddy
Afghan ground, hands over her head, mouth open.

The night erupted into red, yellow and orange flames as
the second RPG hit the first Humvee, which Aaron was
in. She wanted to scream, but the blast lifted her off the
ground, hurling her several feet, and she started rolling to
minimize the impact. Keeping her mouth open to equalize
the pressure between her lungs and the outside air so they
wouldn’t melt into jelly, Kira had the M4 strapped in a harness
across her chest. She fell hard on her side, the weapon
jamming into her rib cage, making her cry out.

Another explosion erupted. Her eardrums were pounded.
The pain in them caused her to grunt. The shouts, screams
and orders roared into her head. She saw dark shadows
exiting her Humvee, the other four men trying to escape
and run for cover.

Someone jerked her up by the shoulder of her uniform
harness, dragging her along, heading for a group of shadowy
rocks. Gasping, Kira struggled and then lunged to her
feet with the help of Sergeant Garret Fleming, who was at
her side. He was screaming into his mic for the four operators,
ordering them to get to the safety of the rock fortress
just ahead of them.

Another RPG was fired. AK-47 fire was like a fusillade
slamming into the escaping Special Forces survivors. Kira
didn’t have time to cry. The first Humvee was twisted
metal, flames roaring into the dark sky, sending long, dancing
shadows across the muddy soil. She slipped, but Garret
kept a tight gloved hand on her uniform, keeping her on her
feet as they raced three hundred yards to safety. They had
to get cover or they were all dead.

Her mind spun. There had been six men in that first
Humvee. Had any of them made it out? She heard Garret
yelling into the mic for Captain Michelson, but there was
no answer from their leader. Oh, God! She’d lived with this
team for three years. Each of these men were like beloved
brothers to her. They couldn’t be dead. The just couldn’t!

Sobbing, tears burning in her eyes, Garret suddenly
went down. She heard him curse. He released her shoulder,
sending her spinning and falling to the left of him. Bullets
were digging up mud all around them, geyser spouts flung
into the air. They were not only ambushed but surrounded
on half of the area where they were scrambling to find
cover. Landing hard on her knees, she twisted around, the
mud making everything slippery. Kira saw the shadows
of two other A team members running in their direction.
Bullets mowed them down. Screaming, Kira lunged for
Garret, who was grabbing his left leg, blood spurting from
his calf.

Just as she reached Garret on her hands and knees, a
second bullet struck him in the head. He suddenly collapsed,
lifeless, on the ground.

No! I love him! You can’t kill him! You can’t!

Kira grabbed Garret’s shoulder. The man was six foot
two inches tall, two hundred and twenty pounds without
counting the seventy pounds of gear he wore on his body.
Jerking at him, she managed to get to her feet. Adrenaline
gave her the strength of two men and she hauled Garret
behind the rocks that stood five to ten feet tall in a semicircle
around them. She called for their 18 Delta medics.
No answer from either of them. There were two on each
team. Were they both dead?

No!

“His anxiety ran him. He had no control over it and he’d
found out quickly, after his discharge, that a stressful job
only tripled the monstrous anxiety that was always there,
always waiting to leap upon him and scatter his thoughts,
his actions.

As he bit into the burger, he closed his eyes, made a low
sound of pleasure in the back of his throat, slumping against
the metal chair, in Nirvana. Reese knew if he gulped it down,
he’d more than likely throw it up, so he tamped down on the
animal desire to gulp. He chewed it slowly, savoring every
last bite of the lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cheddar cheese,
and bacon on it. It took him thirty minutes to clean up
everything. The apple pie was melt-in-your mouth, reminding
him of his mother’s own home-cooked pies.

An old ache centered in his heart. His parents wanted
him home, but God, that had been a disaster. Reese wasn’t
going to make them pay for his PTSD, and they didn’t understand
why he had to leave. He wasn’t the best at talking
about his shame over the symptoms that he couldn’t control.

His father had been in the military, retired, and was
now a hardworking mechanic. He had saved all his life for
retirement, and Reese wasn’t about to take his money that
he’d offered to him. He had to stand on his own two feet,
pull himself up by his bootstraps, and not accept handouts.

As he rose and placed the chair against the wall, he saw
the door open. A young woman with light brown hair,
slightly curly around her oval face, walked in. All his acute
senses focused on her. She was wearing a black baseball
cap, a blue chambray shirt like the one he wore, a heavy
Levi’s jacket, and a pair of loose-fitting jeans that indicated
she had a lush figure hidden beneath them. His heart
jolted as their eyes met briefly. She had sky-blue eyes, just
this side of turquoise, wide set and intelligent. She was
attractive, wore no makeup, but her high cheekbones were
flushed, as if she’d been running or working out hard.

His stomach clenched, and suddenly, Reese worried that
if she was the owner of the Bar C, he might not get the job.
That she’d be afraid of him like so many other women were,
once they saw him. In the Corps, wearing his uniform or
utilities, women had always given him a pleasing look,
scoping him out, their gazes telling him they’d like to know
him a lot better. He almost laughed as he struggled to get
his anxiety corralled. Since he’d fallen from grace, his
scruffy, bearded, homeless look scared the hell out of females.

Reese knew he wasn’t a bad-looking man, but
somehow, no woman could see the real him in his present
state of dishevelment. He would never hurt a woman or
child. But the look in their eyes spoke of exactly that: fear
that he was capable of violence against them. It was a bitter
pill to swallow to be judged by what he wore on the outside
instead of who he really was inside.”

Excerpt: Wind River Rancher for the HEA/USA Today blog!

December 26, 2016

Hi Readers!
I hope you’ve had a warm, fuzzy Christmas!

I’ve given HEA/USA Today blog an in-depth look at why I wrote Wind River Rancher. The hero, Reese Lockhart, was shattered by PTSD, but still fighting to be whole once more. It is the story of a homeless vet fighting to turn his life around. Shay Crawford, owner of the Bar C, a safe haven for down-on-their-luck vets who can get a wrangling job and retrieve their pride and self-confidence once more.

Don’t miss this eye-opening and deeply personal blog that I’ve written. It will explain so much as to why I write about our military people and also those with PTSD.

WIND RIVER RANCHER by Lindsay McKenna — EXCERPT!

December 16, 2016

Hi Dear Readers!!
My latest cowboy romance, Wind River Rancher was just award a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly Magazine. I created the Wind River Valley series for Zebra/Kensington. The cowboy hero of this book is a down on his luck Marine Corps captain forced to return to civilian life.
wind-river-rancher-revised-comp

Most readers don’t know about this magazine because it’s the icon within the traditional publishing industry. PW, as we refer to it, is the iconic queen of it all. It’s sort of like when PW speaks, everyone listens.

To receive a “starred review” on any book, is like winning an Oscar. And as a writer and storyteller, I never expect to ever be reviewed by PW, much less received it. Here’s the review!

To celebrate, here is the opening to Wind River Rancher! Enjoy and share! Thank you!

wind-river-rancher-200x150-400x300

EXCERPT: Wind River Rancher by Lindsay McKenna
Reese Lockhart’s stomach was tight with hunger as he
stood at the outskirts of a small Wyoming town called
Wind River. The sign indicated a population of two thousand.
He’d gone a month without decent food. Six inches
of snow stood on the sides of the road where he’d walked
the last ten miles on 89A north. It headed toward Jackson
Hole, where he was hoping to find work.

The town, for a Monday afternoon, was pretty slow. A
couple of pickup trucks came and went, a few people
walked along the sidewalks on either side of the highway
that ran through the center of town. He halted outside
Becker’s Hay and Feed Store, an aged redbrick building
standing two stories high. The red tin roof was steep and
sunlight reflected off it, making Reese squint. Bright lights
now hurt his eyes.

Taking a deep breath, feeling the fear of rejection once
again, he pushed open the door to the store. Would he get
yelled at by the owner? Told to get out? It was early May
and snow had fallen the night before. The sleepy town of
Wind River still had slush on its streets midday.

The place was quiet, smelled of leather, and he saw a
man in his sixties, tall, lean, and with silver hair, sitting
behind the counter. He was sitting on a wooden stool that
was probably the same age as he was, an ancient-looking
calculator in his work-worn hands as he methodically
punched the buttons.

Girding himself, ignoring the fact he hadn’t eaten in two
days, Reese’s gaze automatically swung around the huge
establishment. A hay and feed store was something he was
familiar with. Maybe the owner wanted some part-time
help. He needed to make enough money to buy a decent
meal.

Shoving away the shame he felt over his situation, he
saw the man lift his head, wire-rim spectacles halfway
down his large nose, his blue eyes squinting at Reese as he
approached the long wooden counter.

“Howdy, stranger. Can I help you?” the man asked.

“Maybe,” Reese said. “I’m looking for work. I saw you
have several big barns out back, and a granary. Do you have
any openings?” Automatically, Reese tensed. He knew he
looked rough with a month’s worth of beard on his face,
and his clothes were dirty and shabby. At one time, he’d
been a Marine Corps captain commanding a company of
120 Marines. And he’d been damn good at it until—

“I’m Charlie Becker, the owner,” the man said, shifting
and thrusting his hand across the desk toward him.
“Welcome to Wind River. Who might you be?”

“Reese Lockhart,” he said, and he gripped the man’s
strong hand. He liked Charlie’s large, watery eyes because
he saw kindness in them. Reese was very good at assessing
people. He’d kept his Marines safe and helped them through
their professional and personal ups and downs over the
years he commanded Mike Company in Afghanistan. Charlie
was close to six feet tall, lean like a rail, and wore a
white cowboy shirt and blue jeans. Reese sensed this older
gentleman wouldn’t throw him out of here with a curse—
or even worse, call law enforcement and accuse him of
trespassing.

The last place where he’d tried to find some work, they’d
called him a druggie and told him to get the hell out; he
smelled. While walking the last ten miles to Wind River,
Reese had stopped when he discovered a stream on the flat,
snow-covered land, and tried to clean up the best he could.
The temperature was near freezing as he’d gone into the
bushes, away from the busy highway, and stripped to his
waist. He’d taken handfuls of snow and scrubbed his body,
shivering, but hell, that was a small price to pay to try to not
smell so bad. He hadn’t had a real shower in a month,
either.

“You a vet, by any chance?” Charlie asked, his eyes
narrowing speculatively upon Reese.

“Yes, sir. Marine Corps.” He said it with pride.

FLORIDA LIBRARY HAS SPECIAL LINDSAY MCKENNA DISPLAY!

November 2, 2016

Hi Readers!

FLORIDA LIBRARY HAS SPECIAL LINDSAY MCKENNA DISPLAY!

Titusville, Florida, Public LIbrary with their Lindsay McKenna book display--plus SWAG that the patrons can have!

Titusville, Florida, Public LIbrary with their Lindsay McKenna book display–plus SWAG that the patrons can have!

Linda Townsend, one of the five Kensington Facebook Take Over for Wind River Wrangler, was a winner (she won a ‘mini-Roan’ bookmark, plus other swag), had asked if I had any ‘extra’ swag for 2 libraries that she frequented where she lived. I said: of course I do! 😉

Wind River Valley Facebook Party

I love libraries and I adore the librarians! They love books just as much as any reader or author. Did you know that from my sophomore to senior year at Medford Senior H.S., I worked in the library every day we had school. It must have been a foreshadowing of my life as a writer! I love libraries!

Today, 11.2.16, I got this photo and email from Brenda Reilly, who is the Head of Reference at the Titusville (Florida) Public Library.
After receiving the photo she took, I sent her back a thank you email message. For Libraries who want to work with me, I have ‘special’ SWAG for them, besides what I’d sent to Brenda. I have a cool handbag with the Delos symbol on it, plus a really neat spiral-bound notebook! I’ll be sending her 20 of each and I’m SURE her patrons will love them!

INTERVIEW:
Lindsay McKenna: If you’ve ever been stalked (and I have), it’s a terrible, 24 hour a day feeling of being hunted by an invisible hunter who wants to hurt you. I used that experience in this book and Shiloh’s reactions to her stalker, are from my own life laid over hers.

SCENE SET UP:
Shiloh Gallagher, an Easterner, a ‘tenderfoot,’ has been at the Wind River Ranch in Wyoming for almost 2 weeks. Roan Taggart, wrangler and her ‘babysitter,’ is riding with her. He and his men are taking a large herd of buffalo and herding them into a new area to graze. Shiloh has second thoughts about riding into the pasture at all…

Here is an exclusive excerpt:
“Shiloh was looking at all the brown humped buffalo cows and their frolicking calves. It looked bucholic. But the animals were huge! She saw about half a mile away on the opposite side of the pasture, two wranglers opening up the large gate to allow the mothers and calves to come through to the lush, green area. She saw Roan pick up his radio and talk to the other wranglers. Seesawing between staying outside the gate and following Roan in, she saw him finish off his chat with the wranglers.

Stuffing the radio into his saddlebags, Roan looked up at Shiloh. “Well?”

“I’m waffling.”

He grinned. “Yes, you are.”

Making a face, Shiloh admitted, “I don’t want you to think I’m a weenie.”

Chuckling, Roan lifted his hat and moved his gloved fingers through his hair. “I would never think that of you, Shiloh.” He came over and rested his hand against the rear of her saddle, looking up into her indecisive features.

“I’ll respect you no matter what you decide. Okay?”

Grimacing, she muttered, “I’m going in with you.” Looking around, anger tinging her voice, she added, “I’m tired of feeling scared all the time, Roan. If I was back in New York City, I’d be sitting imprisoned in my apartment, feeling like a convict behind bars because somewhere out there, a man wants to hurt me and I don’t know who it is.”

His heart wrenched. Roan eased his hand down her arm and caught her gloved fingers. “You don’t have to prove anything to me. All right?”

She tucked her lower lip between her teeth, squeezing his hand in return. “I’m just tired of being scared, Roan.”

“I know, Darlin’. But if you decide to come in, do it for yourself. Okay?”

Roan was right, she realized. “Yes,” she muttered, releasing his hand even though she didn’t want too. Just the intimacy Roan had automatically established with her, calmed her, helped her sort out what was really going on. “They’re just big, is all.

Interview:
Lindsay McKenna: Every writer I know, including myself, has had Writer’s Block at one time or another. And Shiloh, being a New York Times romance writer, has it when she goes to visit Maud and Steve Whitcomb at their ranch in Wind River Valley. Roan Taggart, the wrangler and ex-black ops soldier, has been dissolving some of her fear of being found once more by her stalker. Let’s drop in on an exclusive excerpt with them as they eat their meal at the employee house:

SCENE SET UP:
Maud and Steve Whitcomb, owners of the ranch, had been friends with Shiloh Gallagher’s family for decades. They have invited Shiloh to stay as long as she wants with them. Roan Taggart has just gotten writer Shiloh Gallagher assigned to the employee house. It has been two weeks since Shiloh moved in and shares the employee house with him. The wrangler’s other job is to more or less ‘babysit’ Shiloh. Reluctant about the assignment at first, as time goes on, Roan finds out more about her…

EXCERPT 3 RESISTING SHILOH….OR CAN HE?

“Later, as they sat at one another’s elbows, eating dinner at the employee house where they lived, Roan detected a subtle sense of happiness around Shiloh. Again, nothing obvious, but his operator’s senses told him that. “You said you were writing a chapter? On your latest book? The one that’s due to your editor’s desk?”

“Yes.” She shrugged. “I woke up this morning WANTING to write for the first time since coming here.” She met his gray gaze, seeing interest in them. Roan, she was discovering, missed nothing. He listened to her without ever interrupting her flow of thought. “First time.”

“Is this a good thing?” he wondered, adding more spoonfuls of whipped potatoes onto his plate.

“Sure is,” she sighed, giving him a look of relief. “I’ve had writer’s block for the last six months. I just haven’t felt the driving passion to write.” She added some green beans onto her plate. “Ever since the stalker came into my life, my writing has turned off.”

“Kind of expected?”

“I suppose,” Shiloh muttered. “It’s hurt me in so many ways, seen and unseen.”

“It’s what we in the military call psy ops or psychological warfare.”
