Memorial Day Remberances by Lindsay McKenna

May 30, 2016

I want to honor my father and mother on Memorial Day. My father, Jack Zimmerman, was a Pharmacists Mate 1st class in the US Navy. He was assigned to Hawaii, to Oahu, the hospital that sits next to Pearl Harbor. My mother worked in civil service at Ford Island, in Pearl Harbor, with the US Navy.
Both my parents were there when Pearl Harbor was hit by the Japanese, December 7, 1941. My father was on duty at the hospital that morning. My mother was asleep in their bed. A Japanese Zero went roaring down the road, strafing her neighborhood. She had a bullet pass just above the headboard of the bed where she was sleep.

That day, my parents helped all the heroes who were caught off guard by that horrific attack on battleship row, next to Ford Island. If it hadn’t of happened on a Sunday, my mother would have been on Ford Island, in one of the hangars, working as a secretary.

I grew up with the story of Pearl Harbor from a very different perspective than most of the Great Generation and Baby Boomer Generation remember. I have the blood of the battle in my DNA. And I never forget what they did that day, the sights, the sounds, the nauseating smells, the diving Japanese fighters like hornets swarming over Pearl Harbor.

It’s no wonder I grew up and at age 18, went into the US Navy to follow in my father’s footsteps. My mother’s brother, Vinton Cramer, served in WW2, US Army, was a paratrooper and dropped in over France to do his duty.

US Navy boot camp photo of me. I followed in my father’s footsteps and paid my service to my country, as he and so many other of our family, had done in past wars. My war was Vietnam. And it’s no wonder that later on? I became a writer and I created the first military romance, Captive of Fate, 1983, Silhouette Special Edition. I have gone on from that day to the present, writing about our heroic men and women in 185 books, since then. And will continue to do so until it’s my time to cross over. Our military is 1% of our nation. They give the other 99% their freedom. Let’s honor their sacrifices, as well as their family’s sacrifices on this one day of the year. Memorial Day is NOT a holiday. It was created as “Remembrance Day” to honor those who died serving their country.

Let us remember those of our family, both on our mother and father’s side, of the service they gave to our country to keep us all free on this one day out of the entire year.

cover of Ranchrs and Cowboys collection Harlequin 2.15.16

Here’s a peek at my book in the collection, THE LAST COWBOY, HQN:

The Last Cowboy by Lindsay McKenna

The Last Cowboy

City girl. It was written all over her like a sign warning him to keep off. Sure, Slade McPherson would train her horse…With his ranch one bad day away from foreclosure, he can’t afford to turn away a paying customer. But no way is this cowboy getting involved with a woman like Jordana Lawton—no matter how pretty she looks in a saddle.

Yet everything can change in an instant. A terrifying run-in with an angry bull tilts Slade’s world off its axis, leaving him wounded and unable to compete in a race that could change his future, for good. With Jordana by his side, he just might stand a chance. But what happens when this old-school cowboy finds himself falling for a modern city girl?

Plus….

The Rancher by Diana Palmer

Cort Brannt, the heir to the Skylance Ranch empire, has women gallop into his life, but the handsome lone wolf sends them just as quickly on their way…until a pretty, vivacious neighbor appears on the range. Has the most eligible bachelor in Branntville, Texas met his match?

A Cowboy’s Redemption by Marin Thomas

Cruz Rivera is on his last chance. He can’t afford to blow it by falling for the beautiful blonde who just hired him to fix up her family’s New Mexico property. If he’s going to get back on the rodeo circuit, Cruz needs to focus. Besides, a sweet single mom like Sara Mendez can do better than someone with Cruz’s troubled past. Sara isn’t making it easy for Cruz to keep his distance. He’s a man of many secrets, but Sarah sees only good in his heart. Though Cruz knows he should move on before Sara discovers the truth about his past, he can’t leave the closest thing to a home he’s ever known. Cruz is the only man Sara wants—can he become the one she deserves?

Available February 15, 2016, but can be pre-ordered now!

NIGHT HAWK by LIndsay McKenna: The Making of a Cover!

January 8, 2016

KING OF A ROMANCE COVER: NIGHT HAWK by Lindsay McKenna, HQN, Book 10 Wyoming Series

Screen Shot 2016-01-08 at 7.01.20 AM

Night Hawk cover

Harlequin was very nice in sending this to me. Readers are ALWAYS fascinated by what goes into the making of a cover.
NIGHT HAWK is set in the Jackson Hole, WY area.

What I love in this one is that the Moulton Barn, in the background, is in the valley with the Tetons in the background. Whoever made this cover in the Art Department went out of their way to get the area “right’, which is always great (but doesn’t happen often.)

Every time I go up to the Grand Tetons (20 north of Jackson Hole, WY) and Yellowstone National Park (which is 50 miles norht of JH), I always stop and take photos of Moulton Barn. And here’s one of my recent photos of it. You can see they are the same barn….where reality meets fiction!
From a photographer’s viewpoint? Moulton Barn is an ICON and a “Bucket List” place for serious amateur and professional photographers. What’s nice is that it is 1.5 days away from where Ilive. I’ll be gong up to Caspar, WY for Kallypso Masters Kallycon featuring cowboy authors in late August, 2016.

http://kallypsomasters.com/kallypsocon/kallypsocon-2016/

And then? Why we’ll drive from Caspar afterward over to Jackson Hole and spend seven heavenly days shooting wildlife during rutting season in the Tetons National Park, and of course. I will make my annual visit to Moulton Barn and photographic again

If you’re coming to Kalycon/Caspar (and I hope you do!) maybe some of you will join me on our photographic hunt for Moose, Grizzly, Antelope, Elk, Deer, and other fabulous wild creatures that we love to photograph so much!

It is an ICONIC place for all photographers to come and shoot it and they come from around the world!

KALLY CON in CASPAR, WYOMING! COWBOY AUTHORS AND READERS!

January 1, 2016

ARE YOU COMING, READERS! Yahooooo….we’re gonna have a high ole time ;_)

Kallypso con 2016-01-01 at 10.42.39 AM

I’ll be coming! Would LOVE to meet my readers who can make it! Huge giveaways (I mean wowser here!) by all the attending authors.

From Kallypso Masters !!!

I know a number of the people in this group attended my second annual KallypsoCon last year, held in New Hampshire. The theme was Military Romance and it was just about perfect. This year’s theme is Western Romance, but a number of the featured authors also write military heroes, including Delilah Devlin, Sable Hunter, Cat Johnson, Lindsay McKenna, Hildie McQueen, and of course me!

This con isn’t like anything you’ve ever attended. Those who went to the Everett, WA, or Southern NH ones can tell you more! (Please share your experiences, ladies and gents!) I limit it to a very small number of authors. Quality, not quantity. I want you to get to share meals with them, play games, ask questions, having impromptu conversations, laugh, and just hang out with them as friends throughout the weekend. I also limit the number of readers to 100.

And each of my featured authors helps me to give back to readers and show our appreciation for you by sponsoring up to $1000 in perks (drink tickets for parties, premium KallypsoCon swag), helping to reduce the cost of the overall event. This year is the least expensive registration we’ve had yet–only $125 per person! And Charlotte (my awesome PA) also negotiated a fantastic deal with the hotel so you can get a room with two queen beds for only $89/night! We also booked a hospitality suite (the presidential suite!) so that we’ll have a place to hang out between events or late into the evening. (We were missing that at the 2015 event.) The authors will be more accessible throughout the weekend (not just sticking to the scheduled events as they might at the bigger cons, too).

To learn more about what we have in mind, go to my KallypsoCon web site at

http://kallypsomasters.com/kallypsocon/kallypsocon-2016/

In general, the format has stayed the same both of the first two years, but when I get into planning the evening activities more with the authors, we’ll flesh out the details. And if the number of readers exceeds the number of dinner tables we have (I like to have a different author at each table because sharing a meal with an author is so special), I’ll even add more authors. There are several great western Romance authors waiting in the wings, but we need to get our registration numbers high enough before I add anyone else. I know quite a few of the attendees at the 2014 and 2015 events plan to be there (and some have already reserved their spots). Hope you’ll be able to join us, too! You’ll make friends faster than at any other con. I promise!

Night Hawk cover
After losing his comrade, Sergeant Gil Hanford thought a visit to the man’s widow would be the decent way to honor his late friend. But Gil found more than comfort in Kai Tiernan — he had always secretly desired the beautiful Kai, but a sudden, mutual passion helped assuage their grief…until duty reared its head, removing him from her arms, seemingly forever.

Four years later, Kai is starting over at the Triple H Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. born a rancher, she is looking for a new beginning—but her new boss in unforgivably familiar. Kai has tried to move past the memory of what happened between her and Gil, sen though she’s never forgiven him for leaving her. But even as they begin their journey toward something new and oh-so-uncertain, a shadow emerges, determined to claim Kai for itself.

Dear Reader,
I love what-ifs because they lead me down some interesting, twisted, turning paths. In Night Hawk, you will meet former Delta Force sergeant Gil Hanford, who went into the US Army at eighteen.

Gil met and worked with Sam Morrison. Sam was married to US Army Apache combat helicopter mechanic Kai Tiernan. Gil fell in love with Kai but, respectful of their marriage, he kept his distance. It was a painful time for Gil because he saw how
unavailable Sam was to his wife, Kai. He could only sympathize with their plight.

Sam is killed in a firefight, and Gil is there when it occurs. Feeling grief-stricken, wanting to console Kai, he goes to her to offer his condolences. They end up in one another’s arms for five days, dealing with conflicting emotions. On the morning of the fifth day, Gil is ordered out on an undercover op. He thinks it’s for a few days, but it ends up being two years.
Kai is left without her husband and without Gil. She never finds out what happens to Gil. Thinking he’s used her to soothe his grief, Kai goes back to Wyoming and drifts from one ranch
to another. Few ranchers are willing to hire a woman to be a mechanic.

Finally, four years later, she ends up at the Triple H Ranch near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It’s only half a day later that she meets the ranch foreman: Gil Hanford…

Join my newsletter to get all kinds of exclusive information given to subscribers only, giveaways and my latest books coming out at lindsaymckenna.com!

I hope you enjoy Night Hawk. All the best,

HERE’S AN EXCERPT:

“Gil put his hands on his hips, staring at her. “I’m the foreman.”

Kai closed her eyes for just a moment, opened them, feeling the air sucked out of her lungs. “Y-you work here, too?” No! That wasn’t possible! This couldn’t be happening! Her mind worked at the speed of light. Her heart expanded with traitorous emotions, want- ing Gil. Again. God, she could not go there! The bastard had walked out on her after five days of the most wonderful loving she’d ever experienced with a man. Gil had left suddenly without explanation, never to return. She hadn’t seen him for four years.

Anger f lowed through Kai. Gil had used her as a convenient sex partner to bury himself in to get rid of his grief. His brother Rob, a Delta Force operator with another team in Afghanistan, had been killed. Gil had seen his brother’s body to the morgue at Bagram and then looked her up.

Touching her brow, Kai saw his generous mouth moving into a resistant, thin line. She remembered that mouth. Far too well. The pleasure he’d given her. Kai had never known such tenderness and vulnerability in a man until Gil had walked into her life for those five days. She’d been a widow for a year. When he reappeared, he said he needed her. Silly her. She’d believed him and they had ended up in a five-day sexual feast that was the best thing that Kai had ever encountered with a man. Yet, on the sixth morning, when she awakened, Gil was gone. No note. No ex- planation. No email. No…nothing. She wished she could have forgotten him, but she never had.

And now, he was towering over her, all six feet of him, broad, capable shoulders beneath a white cowboy shirt, a black leather vest stretching across his powerful chest. His Levi’s were worn and dirty, but from Kai’s view, his strong, hard thighs were just as beautiful now as they were when they’d captured her legs and held her in place to give her the most incredible pleasure she’d ever had.  And then, he’d run. Kai had never felt so used by a man. Now, the bastard was standing there, defensive, bristling, and she could feel the energy pouring off him toward her. She was only five feet seven inches tall. She wasn’t short, but she wasn’t Gil’s height, either.

What would he do? Try to get her fired? Invent some lame excuse to let her go? Would he do that to her after what they’d shared? She searched his eyes, which were now a darker, stormy blue. Kai could feel how taut and upset he was. It felt as if they were two boxers in a ring sizing each other up, looking for weak spots, a place to get in and punch, taking the other down.”
