I’m going to put out a series of blogs between now and 10.25.16, when Wind River Wrangler is released! I thought you might like to know some inside, secret information from author to reader, about this book, and about the characters. Today, I’m going to speak about my secondary characters I created for the book. I hope you enjoy this EXCERPT from a scene with Maud Whitcomb, a very important secondary character in my book!
INTERVIEW WITH LINDSAY MCKENNA ON CREATING WIND RIVER WRANGLER!
Lindsay McKenna: I love my secondary characters and I try to make them as interesting and with as much depth and breadth as my hero and heroine. Meet Maud Whitcomb, the owner of the Wind River Ranch in the valley! She’s a fifty-year old, take-no-prisoners, strong ranching woman with a heart of gold. Let’s drop in on an exclusive excerpt with her and Shiloh Gallagher, the heroine!
SET-UP FOR SCENE: Shiloh Gallagher has just been picked up at the Jackson Hole Airport by Roan Taggart, wrangler for Maud and Steve Whitcomb. Maud is a long time friend of Shiloh’s family and has invited her to come and stay as long as she wants. Shiloh has been stalked by an unknown man and it has rattled her after six months of being hunted. Her writing is her livelihood and since the stalking has ramped up, she’s gotten writer’s block. Maud invites her to come West to stay at their Wind River Ranch. And now, we’re dropping in on a conversation between Maud and Shiloh at the ranch….
“Maud smiled. “Did Roan find you at the airport in time?”
“He sure did. About scared the crap out of me.”
“He came up behind me and called my name. I about jumped out of my skin.”
Maud smiled. “Did he tell you he was in black ops? US Army? A Special Forces weapons sergeant?”
Rolling her eyes, Shiloh said, “No, but it sure explains to me why he came up behind me so silent. I never heard or felt him coming. He’s pretty closed mouth.” And then she laughed a little. “Well, if he was black ops, why wouldn’t he be that way? Right?” She grinned over at Maud, who chuckled.
